Who would have ever thought that our program to help
our local Veterans would have grown like it has in the last few years?
Every Thursday at the Goldsby
Community center
we are seeing an average of 50 to 60 of our military Veterans. Last week
there were over 50 claims with 20 of those being there for the 1st
time.
Several of the widows whose husbands died from service
connected illnesses were approved for benefits last week. Many of these
ladies are not aware of what they are entitled to receive.
All of us that are here at the community center are
volunteers trying to help our fellow Veterans. We try to stay organized
and work each person according to their arrival time. Sometimes we have
taken what some may think is to long but we want to serve each and
everyone to the best of our ability.
The Veteran who traveled the longest distance was from
East of Shawnee. We had 4 who were approved for the 100% rate with many
more receiving from 10% to 60%. There were 75 for our weekly lunch at
Libby’s last week with our Chaplain Mr. Billy Prater of Norman
motivating us with his spiritual blessing. We certainly appreciate what
he does for our group.
If you have never had lunch with us stop by and maybe
you will find a new place to go each Thursday. Our men and women who
served in the Gulf war should all stop by and fill out the forms to sign
up on the medical registry the VA has set up for them. The Viet-nam Agent Orange registry is open also for anyone
that has that service medal on there DD-214 with some of the Korean
Veterans being eligible also.
